Little story about the magnificent city of Olhão.

Olhão had, since prehistoric times, signs of settlement that attest to the occupation of this territory. The oldest written reference to this place designates it, in 1378, as the place they call Olham.

The bar at hand and the existence of abundant water would have been decisive factors for some fishermen, at the beginning of the 17th century, to start settling on Olhão beach. The village develops against the will of the Faro authorities, to which it belonged. For this growth, it benefits, from the middle of the 17th century, from the protection of the Fortress of S. Lourenço which, although precarious, kept watch over the entrance to the bar and deter the corsair attacks.

The increase in coastal fishing and the high seas, as well as trade, causes a great population surge and, in 1695, the inhabitants of this place required the Bishop to detach the parish of Quelfes, so that the Parish of Nossa Senhora was created. of the Rosário de Olhão.

During the French occupation of the Algarve in 1808, a spontaneous and genuine popular uprising against the abuses of the invaders emerged in Olhão, on 16 June. This revolt culminates in the expulsion of the French from the place of Olhão and, on impulse, from the whole Algarve. The following month, 17 men from Olhão boarded the Caíque “Bom Sucesso” to Brazil, with the mission of bringing the news of the expulsion to the Court of Colony. The aforementioned crew had taken a letter, unofficial, in which was described the audacious attitude that Olhanenses took in this revolt. The reward resulted in a permit with the force of law, with which the Prince-Regent decides to distinguish Olhão, and its inhabitants, moving from place to Vila and ordering that “be called Vila de Olhão da Restauração”
