The municipality of Tavira is located in the south of Portugal, in the Algarve, more precisely in the Eastern Algarve.
It occupies an area of ​​607 km² and has a resident population of 26,167 inhabitants (2011 census), extending from the seafront to the interior, structured in three sub-regions: the coast, the barrocal and the mountains. It is distributed by six parishes: Tavira (Santa Maria and Santiago), Conceição and Cabanas de Tavira, Luz de Tavira and Santo Estêvão, Santa Catarina da Fonte do Bispo, Santa Luzia and Cachopo.
The climate of the region is temperate Mediterranean, the average annual temperature is around 18ºC, as in the rest of the coast and barrocal of the eastern Algarve. In the month of August the maximum temperatures are around 30ºC and the minimum ones are 19ºC, in January the temperatures are around 16ºC and the minimum temperatures are 7ºC. Tavira has an average annual rainfall of 576 mm, spread over about 65 days, and offers around 300 days of annual sunshine.
Tavira is a historical city of very ancient origin. Known data allow us to establish that in the 8th century BC the Phoenicians established here a fortress, on the hill today called Santa Maria. The period of Roman domination left indelible marks in the ancient city of Balsa, a city referenced in ancient sources, a few kilometers west of Tavira. The vast area designated by the Muslims of Al Garb al Andaluz was occupied by them from 712, but it was not until much later that Tavira was referenced in written sources.
