Montoito is a Portuguese parish in the municipality of Redondo, with an area of ​​61.71 km²[1] and 1029 inhabitants (2021 census)[2]. Its population density is 16.7 inhabitants/km².

It was founded in 1270 and was the county seat between 1517 and the beginning of the 19th century. It consisted of a parish and had 704 inhabitants in 1801. Montoito holds the category of town. In this village there are two churches: the main church of Nossa Senhora da Assunção, located in the extreme south of the town, next to the cemetery, and the church of Espírito Santo which is in the center of the village, although the height at which it was built is also unknown. Located in one of the squares (the bandstand) – April 9th ​​– there was an attached hospice with “the circle of foundlings”, dependent on the Order of Malta that functioned as Misericórdia, and which is perpetuated in the name of the street where it existed: Travessa do Hospital.

It was an ancient commendation of the Order of the Hospital of Saint John of Jerusalem, Rhodes and Malta, or just the Order of Malta, as it is called today. This is why the municipal coat of arms bears the cross of the aforementioned Order[3].
